Defining M2M
Machine to machine (M2M) is a broad label that can be used to describe any technology that enables networked devices to exchange information and perform actions without the manual assistance of humans.
The term ‘M2M’ refers to what is essentially a four step process: data is generated, data is transmitted, data is analyzed, and data acted upon. Most importantly, in M2M all four of these steps can occur automatically and almost instantaneously. M2M includes a broad range of technologies, including: sensors and other hardware, wireless networks, analytic software, and back-end it infrastructure.
When machines "talk" they do so in a language known as "telemetry." The concept of telemetry -- remote machines and sensors collecting and sending data to a central point for analysis, either by humans or computers -- certainly isn't new. But an emerging concept is taking that idea to a whole new level by applying modern-networking technology.
Three very common technologies -- wireless sensors, the Internet and personal computers -- are coming together to create machine-to-machine communications, or M2M. The concept holds great promise in promoting telemetry's use by business, government and private individuals.

Machine-to-machine communication evolves around the automated transfer of data between machines, devices, sensors and central servers with the purpose of remotely monitoring and controlling them with or without human interaction. With the availability of affordable technologies and ever increasing ubiquity of connected services, it is expected that within the next decade billions of devices will be connected via the internet.
